  6. ABOUT ICON HEAVEN
  7.  
  8. Icon Heaven is a Workplace Shell enhancement that simplifies
  9. the task of keeping icon libraries on your disk and assigning icons to
  10. objects. 
  11.  
  12. INSTALLATION
  13.  
  14. Simply unzip this file (FIH.ZIP) into an empty directory and double click 
  15. on the install.cmd object, or, in an OS/2 command session, type 
  16. install+<ENTER>.
  17. The installation procedure will ask you for a directory where 
  18. Icon Heaven should be installed. After selecting a directory, 
  19. the installation procedure will copy all the necessary files to 
  20. that directory and create a number of Workplace Shell objects. 
  21. After the installation terminates, Icon Heaven will be available 
  22. in a folder on the desktop. You can move this folder from
  23. the desktop to any other folder if you wish.

  25. The installation procedure can clean up after itself when terminating.
  26. So the directory used to run the installation from will be empty. You 
  27. only have to save the Zip file if you want to do a re-install later.
  28.  
  29. DE-INSTALLATION
  30.  
  31. If, perchance, you really don't like Icon Heaven, you can easily remove it 
  32. from your system. The installation procedure will install a de-install
  33. object in the Icon Heaven folder. Simply double-click on it and answer
  34. the obligatory queries on whether you are absolutely sure you know what
  35. you are doing and Icon Heaven will be removed. During de-install, you can
  36. ignore the dialog box that asks you to confirm closing the de-install
  37. session, it will close by itself anyway.
  38. In most cases, de-install will not be able to remove the file fim.dll
  39. from the Icon Heaven directory. You can delete this file manually later on
  40. after a reboot when the shell unlocks it.

  42. RE-INSTALLATION
  43.  
  44. A re-installation procedure called reinst.cmd is also provided. If you
  45. happen to delete the Icon Heaven folder from your system, this program
  46. will recreate it for you, including all the icon folders. Just open an
  47. OS/2 Command Prompt window and run REINST from the directory where 
  48. Icon Heaven is installed.
  49.  
  50. THE APPLICATION
  51.  
  52. Icon Heaven uses a special type of folder, called an Icon Folder, 
  53. to store icons. These icons are not physically stored on disk where 
  54. they would take up far too much diskspace for the occasional time 
  55. you need them. Instead Icon Heaven stores icons in special 
  56. compressed libraries and only expands those when they are
  57. accessed. This reduces the storage cost of an icon to a mere 
  58. 7% of the space needed when using normal icons. (On a FAT disk)
  59.  
  60. LIBRARIES INCLUDED
  61.  
  62. This package includes a set of five icon libraries. They are:
  63.     - Wordprocessing icons
  64.     - Datacomm icons
  65.     - Games icons
  66.     - Compiler icons
  67.     - Utility icons
  68.  
  69. A separate set of libraries is available for download from the OS2BVEN forum
  70. on CompuServe. This is a big set containing some 2300 converted
  71. Windows icons. There is no need to download these if you already 
  72. have those as they've been roaming the nets for quite some time now.
  73. Please see intructions below for creating your own libraries. The file
  74. is called FIHLIB.ZIP.

  76. ASSIGNING ICONS
  77.  
  78. Icon Heaven also simplifies assigning icons to objects. Instead of having 
  79. to open the settings for an object and dragging the appropriate icon to 
  80. the General page, icons are assigned by dragging the object to the icon. 
  81. A simple one step operation.

  85. The animated icon for a folder can also be assigned directly by pressing
  86. and holding down the control key during the drag operation. Dropping on
  87. an icon with this method will change the second ('open') icon for the folder.

  89. MANAGING ICON LIBRARIES
  90.  
  91. Icon Heaven does not restrict you to using the icon libraries provided 
  92. with the software. You can easily expand the libraries provided or 
  93. create your own. This is done using normal Workplace actions, by 
  94. dragging a new Icon Folder from the Templates folder or by selecting 
  95. 'Create another' from the popup menu of an existing Icon Folder. Then 
  96. you can 'connect' the folder to a library by opening the settings and 
  97. specifying the name of a new iconlibrary (for instance: 
  98. 'C:\IHeaven\MyIcons.FIM').

  100. Now that you've created the library, you can open it and add icons to it.
  101. Adding icons to a library is simply a process of dragging Workplace objects
  102. to the folder (they don't have to be icon files). This will populate the
  103. folder and the library.

  107. If you want to add the animated icon of a folder object to a library, 
  108. drag the object to the icon folder with the control key pressed. (note:
  109. only folders have animated icons)

  111. THE ICONLIB TOOL
  112.  
  113. Also included is a library manager called iconlib.exe. It allows you
  114. to list the contents of an icon library, pretty up the names of the icons,
  115. add new icons (icon files only) and set the folder name. This tool is useful 
  116. when you have big directories full of icons and you want to convert them
  117. into Icon Heaven libraries, just type:
  118.  
  119.     iconlib c:\IHeaven\cool.FIM c:\icons\cool\*.ico
  120.  
  121. and all the icons in the cool directory will be added to a Icon Heaven 
  122. library named cool.FIM.
  123. The iconlib tool also has a few other features. For an online help of
  124. the switches supported, just run iconlib without any parameters.

  126. REGISTERING

  128. Icon Heaven is shareware. You are granted a 30 day trial period to see if you like
  129. the software. Feel free to pass it on to friends, neighbours and colleages...
  130. If you like Icon Heaven, please register it, support the shareware concept.

  132. Icon Heaven costs only $15. This is for a single OS/2 system lifetime licence 
  133. including any and all future updates to the product.

  148. The actual amount debited from your credit card will be slightly higher
  149. than $15, because of fluctuations in international currency rates. Payment 
  150. will be done in dutch guilders, FL 25,- (about $15.60 at the time I write 
  151. this, the dollar is getting lower by the day)

  153. Private users (not companies) in the European Union but outside
  154. Holland will be charged HFL 29,38, which includes 17.5% Dutch VAT. 
  155. Companies don't have to pay VAT. I don't know why they want to make 
  156. this so hard, but those are the European rules, so I guess the best
  157. thing is to just stick to them.

  159. Users (both private & companies) in the Netherlands can also register

  164. On CompuServe you can also register through the Shareware Registration
  165. Database. To access the database, use GO SWREG and select 'Register
  166. Shareware'. The registration ID for Icon Heaven is: 2983. The price
  167. for registering Icon Heaven through CompuServe is $20, due to the
  168. high fee CIS claims for handling registrations and the fee my bank wants
  169. for processing a cheque from CIS.

  171. Registering will get rid of (some of) the troubles with your conscience as
  172. well as the annoying popup of the about dialog the first time you
  173. open an Icon Folder after a reboot. 
  174. No other limitations are present that force you to register.

  176. REGISTER SAFELY WITH PGP

  178. Better be safe than sorry when sending credit card information over the 
  179. internet. So I'd advise everyone to use PGP to encrypt their registration
  180. message to me. You can use my public key to do this. If you don't have PGP

  194. There is some added functionality to the registered version. 
  195. In the popup menu of each icon a new item will be available: 'Extract'
  196. This will allow you to extract the icon into a plain icon file.
  197. Also you can double click on an icon to invoke the Icon Editor and 
  198. change it.

  230. This library has over 2700 high quality icons, most of them high-resolution.
  231. The format in which it is stored, like FIHLIB.ZIP, is directly useable by
  232. Icon Heaven; no conversion is necessary.

  243. rename them now, but the changes won't be saved).

  247. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  248.  
  249. Don't drag an icon to the general page of an object. For some reason the 
  250. general page does not know how to handle the object being dropped. This
  251. results in drag & drop being unavailable in the whole Workplace Shell (at
  252. least on my system with 2.11).
